10 new things to do in Morzine for winter 2021

December 18th, 2020 Holiday Tips

The ski season may have gotten off to a slow start across the Alps this winter, but there’s no shortage of innovation and exciting new developments in the Morzine Avoriaz ski area.

Make your visit an epic one by being the first in line to discover new places to ski, brilliant foodie experiences and awesome activities that will leave you craving more time in our stunning resort.

1. Step into the void at the Nyon Summit

Camera phones at the ready! We all love a good opportunity to soak up a spectacular panoramic mountain view. Le Pas de l’Aigle viewing platform is a new 10-meter glass footbridge at 2,019 metres altitude at the summit of Nyon, which will offer skiers (and hikers in summer) a 360 ° panorama from Lake Geneva to Mont Blanc.

So far only technicians have felt the dizzying sensation of stepping onto the platform, with a 350m drop beneath their feet, but we reckon this is will quickly become a must-do activity for all visitors to the region. Access is on foot in summer and only possible on skis in the winter via the Nyon chairlift.

2. Make fresh tracks on a new piste

Morzine continues to impress with its commitment to improving our ski area. This year we’ll see a new blue run from the top of the Belvédère chairlift on the Pleney plateau, giving you the option to return to the Pleney ski area or head over to the Nyon area. Expect tree-lined slopes and spectacular views, in this stunning area to ski.

The Nyon area will also see improvements to the Aigle Rouge piste, a red run that goes from the Nyon peak to the Nyon plateau. A complete re-routing of the run includes a large widening of the piste and a 700m altitude difference, which is sure to bring even more shredding opportunity to the area.

3. Increase your horsepower

OK so not strictly new, but largely undiscovered for the majority of skiers who flock to the area each winter, ski joëring is a wild ride through the mountains that combines skiing, horses and winter wonderland scenes you would never normally see. Ski joëring is where you get pulled along by a horse while on skis. With its origins in Scandinavia, this activity was a means of transports some 2500 years ago. Now you can spend an exhilarating hour discovering great speed on dedicated slopes. Give it a go! Call +33 (0) 6 86 07 21 32 or head to https://www.avoriaz-skijoering.com/.

4. Witness rare and amazing birds of prey (whilst skiing!)

If you missed the introduction of Ski Falconry to Morzine last winter, then this year you’ll want to catch these spectacular airborne visitors to the Nyon region. The Eagles of Léman will be back with several magnificent birds of pray including eagles, buzzards and owls, and exciting new options for viewing the birds. Spot the birds while taking one of the new falconry nature trails, or dine in the Restaurant la Pointe de Nyon as they swoop above your head. By prior arrangement, you can even ski with the birds soaring above you on the pistes. For more information and booking conditions head to lesaiglesduleman.com.

5. Breakfast Yoga

If you’re staying in a self catered chalet, why not take up the opportunity for a decent pre-ski stretch with a morning yoga session and fuel up for the day with a unique, chef-prepared breakfast. Your yoga instructor will come to your accommodation to run a private yoga class that’s tailored to your requirements, while a chef prepares a delicious breakfast, plus coffee and herbal teas for you to enjoy when you’re finished. 6. Taste test what could be the best sandwich in Morzine

Au P’tit Casse Croûte is a new gourmet sandwich shop at the top of the rue du Bourg. Pauline Roguet launches the shop this winter, and has sourced all of her ingredients locally, working with butchers, dairy farms and bakers. She’ll serve up breakfast bowls and homemade sandwiches including traditional favourites and speciality breads, as well as cakes, luxury treats, child-friendly and vegetarian options.

7. Hit Eagle (snow) Park

When we feel like hitting a snowpark, we usually think of Avoriaz, but this season we can’t wait to check out what Nyon’s park has to offer. The park is undergoing a complete remodelling, with new features and a new name Eagle Park Morzine. Usually a park that requires a lot of precision to ride, the reshaped and enlarged park should be fun for everyone, from complete beginners to seasoned freestylers riders, who can also test out the new XL version boarder cross starting from the top the Raverettes chair.

8. Stargaze in the mountains

If you’re a confessed mountain addict, and you haven’t yet seen the night-time skyscapes from up high on the mountain, then now is the time to get out snowshoeing for some awe-inspiring star gazing. Turn this into a truly unforgettable evening with dinner at a traditional mountain alpage along the way. No need to have any prior snowshoeing experience, nor your own transport, this is provided by daysawayadventures.com. Don’t forget to make a wish when you see that shooting star!

9. Warm up in the revived Colibri Cafe Bistro

Colibri was born in 2017, but was really the result of years of planning and dreaming from locals Manon and Pauline Baud. This cosy, welcoming place, was soon a huge hit with locals and holidaymakers for its delicious coffee, pancakes, homemade burgers, cakes and pastries which were served non-stop throughout the day. The cafe bistro had to shut its doors after a devastating fire in 2019. We’re delighted to announce our reliable pit-stop near the Pleney is re-opening its doors for 2021. Be sure to stop by for a warm treat on a wintery day.

10. Go self-catered the indulgent way

During recent months we’ve all had to adapt to new ways of thinking. At AliKats we’ve never stopped striving to ensure we continue to offer a holiday experience that feels as effortless as possible, with delicious food and exceptional wine, enjoyed in the comfort of our stunning chalet spaces. This season, we’re taking the hassle out of self-catering, with our new meal delivery service, so you can optimise skiing time and cut out time spent in the kitchen. We deliver a 2-course meal straight to your fridge, with easy instructions for re-heating quickly.
