Winter 2022: What to see and do in Morzine
Thrilling heights, galloping horses, soaring eagles, an enchanting night walk and a real igloo: holidays to Morzine are becoming more magical and amazing than ever before!
Many of you will have missed at least one skiing holiday in Morzine, and may not have graced our slopes for over a year or two. If you’re wondering what’s changed, we’re here to tell you about new and exciting activities to include in your holiday.
Whether you’re visiting with friends, as a couple or family group, put the wow-factor into your holiday with our top picks of things to do and see:
Jaw-dropping viewing platform at Nyon
Le Pas de l’Aigle viewing platform is a new 10-meter glass footbridge at 2,019 metres altitude at the summit of Nyon, which will offer skiers (and hikers in summer) a 360 ° panoramic view from Lake Geneva to Mont Blanc.
Access in only possible with skis on in winter via the Nyon chairlift, and with a 350m drop beneath your feet, is not for the faint-hearted. This is the spot to get some amazing photos to share with family and friends back home.
Magical night walk & light show
Alta Lumina is an enchanting night walk, which tells the story of a travelling music-maker and his hot air balloon through dazzling lights, music, imagery, set design and interactivity. The magical one-kilometre walk takes place in the forest above the village of Les Gets, and has quickly become a ‘must-do’ activity for families visiting the Portes du Soleil.
The inventive storytelling, light shows and interactive elements with capture the imagination of children of all ages.
It’s best to book Alta Lumina online before your holiday.
Horse-powered skiing
To put simply, ski joëring is where you get pulled along by a horse while on skis. Whether this excites or terrifies you, we urge you to give it a try! The thrilling ride through the mountains combines great speeds, beautiful horses and unforgettable Narnia-like scenes, as you explore paths and trails away from the crowds and lifts. With its origins in Scandinavia, this activity was created as a means of transport over 2500 years ago – and when you get away from the crowds it literally feels like going back in time!
Give it a go! Call +33 (0) 6 86 07 21 32 or head to Avoriaz Joering.
Discover an igloo
Most people won’t be aware that Morzine has it’s very own igloo, and you won’t find much about it online, which makes it feel even more secret and special. Kids will love exploring the igloo and playing inside.
The igloo can be found in a stunning spot past the Nyon car park, at the far end of the Vallee de la Manche. It’s a beautiful area for a snowy walk or snowshoe, and has its own picnic area, snow playground and sledging slopes. Less than ten minutes from Morzine by road, to get there take the E bus route.
Spot birds of prey at Nyon
Although ski falconry was new to Morzine in 2020, due to the lift closures last year it skipped a season and has largely missed out on the attention it deserves. This season the Eagles of Léman are back with several magnificent birds of pray including eagles, buzzards and owls.
Spot the birds while taking one of the new falconry nature trails, or lunch in the Restaurant la Pointe de Nyon as they swoop above your head. You can see the birds by accessing Nyon from the telecabin, or by prior arrangement, you can ski with the birds soaring above you on the slopes. Trading skis for snowshoes
You may be asking yourself, why would I want to go snowshoeing on a skiing holiday? The answer is to get away from the crowds to discover the mountains in all their natural beauty. Take a daytime hike to open your eyes to the tranquility and wildlife that’s exceptional to the mountains, or embark on an evening snowshoe where you get to see the epic star-filled sky, and walk to a Savoyard hut for your dinner.
Days Away Adventures offers daytime and evening guided snowshoeing for all abilities.
Yooner your way down the mountain
Although we saw a revival of all types of sledging last season when lifts were closed, the joys of yooner sledging are fairly unknown by visitors to Morzine. Essentially a sledge fitted with a metal blade that can carve, just like a ski, and a shock absorber that helps you slide more comfortably, this gravity-powered machine will revolutionise your sledging into an adrenaline fuelled experience. To get the kit, and find out how to control and use a yooner, book an evening with Indianaventures.
