Summer 2023: Why Morzine should be on your bucket list

April 22nd, 2023 Morzine

It’s fair to say that Morzine is pretty popular when it comes to the winter. However, between you and me, summer here in Morzine is spectacular. We’re not talking mild mannered strolls and the occasional sunny day. We’re talking mountain biking and freshwater swimming; landscapes bursting with nature; long hot sunny days and the most breath-taking views from some of the best summits you’ll ever hit. It’s the perfect destination for outdoor types and families looking for a holiday jam-packed with excitement and wild adventure.

So it’s time to shake off the snow and jump head first into everything the summer has to offer. We’ve put together a list of reasons why you should join us for summer 2023, but you’ve really got to see it to believe it. So what are you waiting for?

9 reasons to take a summer holiday in Morzine

Reason 1: The Mountains

The mountains are the soul of our valley. They breathe life into everything we do. From sport to food they sustain us, and are the reason we all love Morzine so much. And the summer provides fantastic opportunities to explore them in a myriad of ways. We’ll get into the more extreme stuff later, but if you’re looking for peace and quiet, there’s nothing better than a soulful walk through the mountains.

To get a grasp on the pure magnificence of this impressive corner of the Alps, we recommend taking a hike, or jumping on the lifts, to reach the Nyon summit (2109). Here you can brave Le Pas de l’Aigle (or The Eagle’s Step) – a 10m walkway that extends out over the precipice of the mountain. From here you can admire breathtaking views of the valley below, a stunning panorama including Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, and see the eagles soar high above.

Reason 2: The Weather

Now there’s no denying that we love weather chat, we’re a glutton for daily snow reports, but the summer is different. Morzine is, in a word, glorious. Cast off the woollies and thermals because summer in Morzine consists of crisp, blue-sky mornings, blazing sunshine during the day, and long, balmy evenings. It’s the perfect weather for exploring, relaxing and everything in between.

Reason 3: Bikes

The Porte du Soleil is home to the biggest mountain bike park in Europe. Morzine sits right at its heart and is the perfect base for exploring the vast 650+km network of enduro, downhill and cross country trails. From cruisy greens to adrenaline-fuelled blacks, the huge expanse of terrain means that everyone can get involved.

The area is also home to some of the best road cycling in Europe – attracting top cyclists from around the world to test their skills on the famous passes conquered by the champions of the Tour de France. Tackle the imposing Col de Ramaz, or try and beat Lance Armstrong’s time over the brutal Col de Joux Plan. Whatever route you go for, we can guarantee that you’ll be rewarded with stunning views and cold beer at the end.

On the 15th July 2023, Morzine will be hosting a stage finish of the Tour de France after a gruelling route over the top of Col de Ramaz and Col de Joux Plan and there will be a real festival atmosphere in town!

Both the Morzine and Super Morzine bike lifts open on June 16th, and the entire Porte du Soleil is open by June 24th; closing on September 3rd. You can buy passes to suit whatever your needs – from 1 day to a season. For full details, check out the Porte du Soleil website here.

Reason 4: Hiking

Hiking in the mountains is one of the most enriching things to experience here. From peaceful forests to gnarly scrambles, the vast array of trails, peaks and forests allow you to immerse yourself completely in the wilderness. Let yourself be humbled by the scale and beauty of the Alps, as the trees whisper, the wind howls and the birds sing high above.

With literally hundreds of trails to explore it’s impossible to recommend all of our favourites. For a flavour of what the area has to offer though, try Pic de la Corne and Pointe de Chésery, or head to the Morzine Avoriaz web page for a detailed list of all the trails in the area.

Reason 5: Climbing

Often overlooked, outdoor climbing is an incredible way to connect with the mountains. Morzine and the surrounding area offer some fantastic opportunities for beginner and intermediate climbers. There are several via ferrata routes (a series of ladders, steps and bridges following a pass along the cliff face), which offer a great way to get comfortable scaling the rocks up high, without the pressure of rope climbing. If you’re starting out, we recommend recruiting the expertise of a professional guide from the Bureau de Guides.

For the more adventurous, there are lots of interesting bolted routes, particularly on the Rocher de la Chaux in St Jean D’Aulps. You can hire gear from the tourist office in St Jean D’Aulps if you don’t have your own.

Reason 6: Water activities

Water activities might not be an obvious choice for a holiday in the mountains, but there is so much fun to be found in the pools, lakes and rivers! Try swimming, canoeing or paddle boarding on the beautiful lakes in Montriond and Les Gets, or if you’re keen to get the blood pumping, try some of the more extreme watersports. Throw yourself at the mercy of the rapids with white water rafting; or go canyoning and spend a day wading, scrambling, sliding, abseiling and swimming your way down a gorge.

If swimming is more your thing, choose from a fantastic range of pools such as the Morzine Olympic-size swimming pool, Aquariaz in Avoriaz, or the action-packed inflatable aquapark in Les Gets.

Reason 7: Air activities

If the 2,466m summit of Hauts Forts isn’t high enough, paragliding is the one for you. Paragliding (known as parapenting in France) is an exhilarating, yet tranquil way of experiencing the valley by air. Feel the peace and power of the mountains as you ride the thermals above the dramatic Alpine landscape. Alternatively, if a short, sharp rush of adrenaline is more your thing, the Fantasticable is a truly joyful – and eye-watering – experience. This 1200 metre zip wire at the top of the Chaux-Fleri chairlift will let you soar across the valley from one mountain to the other, at superhero speed!

Reason 8: The Morzine Multipass

The Multipass doesn’t seem like the most exciting reason to holiday in Morzine, but it’s actually a fantastic scheme that allows you and your family to access a huge range of free and discounted activities in the Porte du Soleil, for as little as €2 a day! This includes many of the activities listed above, as well as ski lifts, the Morzine swimming pool and ice rink, tennis courts, mini golf, local buses in and around the area, and so much more! You can buy your Multipass at the lift offices around Morzine. For more information, check out the Multipass website here.
