Travelling to France: What Brits Need to Know About the New ETA System

November 14th, 2025 News

Travelling to France is about to involve an extra layer of admin for UK passport-holders. With new EU border systems being phased in, British travellers will soon need to complete an electronic travel authorisation before entering France or any other Schengen-area country. Here’s a clear, straightforward guide to what’s changing and what to expect.

1. What’s Changing?

Two major systems are being introduced across the EU:

ETIAS – European Travel Information and Authorisation System

Expected to launch in 2026, ETIAS will be required for British nationals travelling to France for short stays (up to 90 days in a 180-day period). It’s not a visa, but a pre-travel authorisation that must be completed online.

EES – Entry/Exit System

This new digital border-control system will record entries and exits for non-EU visitors, replacing manual passport stamping and using biometric checks to track permitted stays.

Both systems affect travellers from visa-exempt countries, including the UK.

2. Why It Matters

  • More Pre-Travel Steps
Travellers will need to complete the ETIAS form and receive approval before departure once the system goes live.

  • Automatic Border Checks
EES uses digital records and biometric data to streamline border processing and enhance security.

  • 90/180 Day Rule Remains
ETIAS doesn’t change stay limits – it simply authorises travel within the existing rules.

3. Key Things Brits Should Know

  • Launch Timeline: ETIAS is expected to become mandatory in 2026.

  • Validity: An ETIAS approval should last for up to 3 years, or until your passport expires.

  • What You’ll Need: A biometric UK passport, an email address, payment method, and a completed online form.

  • Dual Nationality: If you have multiple passports, requirements may differ by nationality. Check which one offers the easiest entry route for your trip.

4. What to Do Now

  • Check your passport’s validity and renew if it’s due to expire soon.

  • Keep an eye on official channels (e.g., GOV.UK and EU announcements) for ETIAS launch updates.

  • If you travel frequently to the EU, keep track of your stays to ensure you don’t exceed your 90-day allowance.

  • Expect some adjustment time during the initial rollout of EES at ports and airports.

A Simple Shift for Future Travel

While the upcoming border changes add an extra step to the pre-travel process, they’re designed to make movement across the EU more efficient and secure in the long run.

A quick note from Grace on the AliKats sales team:

“I recently travelled and tried out the nearly identical UK scheme that certain EU nationals now need when travelling from France to the UK. The process was genuinely quick and easy. There’s an app you can download on your phone with around five simple steps to complete, and one of my family members had their authorisation approved that very same evening. The only tip I’d offer is to make sure you’ve got good lighting for the photo – the app is far more particular than any passport officer you’ll ever meet!”
