Things to do with little kids in Morzine (Winter)
Nestled in the heart of the French Alps, Morzine is not only a haven for winter sports enthusiasts but also a magical playground for families with little kids. As our pretty resort transforms into a winter wonderland, we spoke to one of our favourite resort nannies to get her list of top activities to keep the little ones entertained.
To get the scoop on the best things to do with little kids on your family ski holiday in Morzine, we had a chat with the lovely Ally Hinkley, private nanny and owner of A-Range Childcare. Ally’s been creating adventures to keep the tiniest ski resort visitors safe and entertained for over 12 years, and has tried and tested all of Morzine’s kid-friendly pursuits, as well as inventing a few of her own!
Ally’s top things to do with little kids in Morzine
From thrilling sledging adventures to enchanting igloos and delicious sweet treats, Morzine offers a diverse range of family-friendly experiences. Add some of these family activities to your list for a fantastic family ski holiday.
Sledging
Sledging is a classic winter holiday activity, and one all the whole family can enjoy. Morzine boasts numerous gentle slopes suitable for little ones to enjoy the thrill of travelling down a snowy hill. Try Morzine’s main ‘font de neige’, situated behind the row of hotels and restaurants on Avenue de Joux Plane.
Igloo at L’Erignee
For a touch of magic, head into the Vallée de la Manche, where your little explorers can marvel at intricate ice carvings in an enchanting igloo. There’s plenty to do in this area for a whole morning or afternoon, with lovely snowy forest walks, sledging areas and a restaurant for hot chocolates or lunch (with kids meals served).
Ice skating – inside & out
Morzine has options for both indoor and outside ice skating. You’ll find a small ice rink in the main tourist square, where you can hire skates and animal frames to help little ones get straight on the ice. For a bigger ice rink, skate on the home ground of the Penguins, the Morzine-Avoriaz hockey club at the Skoda arena (near the swimming pool).
Carousel
Also in the tourist square in the centre of Morzine, treat your kids to a whimsical ride on a beautiful carousel. From farmyard and mythical creatures, to buses, cars and a pumpkin carriage, let your little one choose their seat for a timeless experience, which will leave them grinning from ear to ear.
Le Petit Train
Hop aboard the small train that weaves through Morzine, providing a scenic journey through the town, as well as a great way to get from A to B. The train does a loop incorporating the Palais des Sports (swimming pool), Super Morzine and Pleney ski lifts.
Swimming pool
Morzine has an excellent indoor swimming pool complex which caters well for families with an Olympic sized pool, medium sized swimming pool and toddler splash pool.
Horse and carriage ride
What could be more magical than snuggling up with your little ones in a horse-drawn carriage as you enjoy a leisurely ride through the snow-covered town. Your carriage awaits at the tourist square in Morzine.
Gondola rides
If your little ones are too young for ski school or are not skiing everyday, a great way to share the joys of the mountains is to ride the gondolas. Pleney, Super Morzine and Nyon lifts all end in an area with restaurants so you can enjoy a crepe or hot chocolate.
Nature and wildlife at Nyon
Also at the top of the Nyon cable car, you’ll find the fascinating Aigles du Leman – a winter sanctuary for birds of prey. You can watch falconry shows and get close to a range of impressive birds including buzzards, eagles and owls. New for 2023 there will be a fun nature trail, with educational information about the mountains and its creatures.
Parc des Dérêches
Take a snowy walk along the river to the children’s play park and little farm. This area along the Dérêche river can be accessed via the elevator next to the Super Morzine lift in Morzine centre (or if driving, park at the swimming pool). It’s a great spot for Gruffalo adventures, treasure hunts and snow building competitions.
Tourist Office Events
Most families come in school holidays, and Morzine tourist boards never fails to put on a fantastic array of workshops, events and street entertainment. Make sure to check out the timetable or pop in to the tourist office in the town centre to get the low down on activities available during your stay.
And that’s our complete list of things to do with little kids in Morzine in winter. We hope you have found some inspiration for adding plenty of magic and adventure to your family ski holiday.
