Winter 2023/2024: What’s New and Not to Miss in Morzine

November 22nd, 2023 Morzine, News

We’ve officially had the first snowfall of the year and it’s clear that Winter 2023/24 in Morzine is shaping up to be pretty epic! This year the people of Morzine have been working hard to make new and exciting developments to our beautiful resort. From new pistes and ski lifts to wellness activities, exciting restaurants and innovative eco initiatives, we’ve rounded-up everything that’s fresh this season in our not-so-sleepy little town.

What’s new for your 2023/2024 ski holiday in Morzine

Skiing

With skiing at its heart, Morzine is always looking for new ways to develop and improve its ski area for everyone – no matter your age, capability or confidence. Beginners can now enjoy a new magic carpet located at the summit of Pleney, starting close to the Nabor chairlift. 147m in length and an elevation of 19.5m, it’s the perfect place to start your skiing journey, with endless green and blue routes to move on to once you’d nailed the basics.

The Arare sector also has a new red run called La Creux de la Neige. 1.5km in length with a 300m vertical drop, this piste goes higher than many in the area and will therefore enjoy the best of the winter snowfall. A new detachable 6-seater chairlift will also replace the old 4 seater Lac Intrêts lift. Not only will this increase its capacity from 2,400 people/hr to 3,000 people/hr, the technical station has been fitted with solar panels, which means a reduction in the lift’s electrical consumption by 5% from last year.

For little skiers and intrepid explorers, there have been further developments in the Pinguin park, Chemin de Zouzous and Eagle park. From statues of wildlife, information boards and exciting jumps and obstacles, these parks are the perfect winter playground; full of imagination and promises of the wild.

And if all of this has left you wondering just how such a massive operation works day in, day out, head out before the crowds and join the dedicated team of ski patrollers on their morning rounds. Learn about the secret life of the slopes through a pisteur’s eyes, and everything that’s involved in keeping the slopes safe for everyone. The tours are free and run once a week during the season. Just pop into the Morzine Tourist Office to make a reservation.

Non-ski adventures and Wellness

Whether you’re a non-skier, taking a day off, or just fancy something different, there are so many adventures to be had. For snow-fun without skis, snow-shoeing is the ultimate way to slow it down and take in the stunning mountain scenery at your own pace. If you’re seeking an alternative way to hurtle down the slopes, try Avokarting – a three wheeled tricycle with hydraulic brakes and bundles of fun.

If you love wildlife, you can learn all about endangered birds of prey in the Alps and how to protect them, at the Les Aigles du Léman winter park. Located in the Morzine ski area at Nyon, you can combine your trip with a visit to the breath-taking Pas de l’Aigle viewing platform.

If throwing yourself down a mountain on skis isn’t enough of an adrenaline hit for you, parapenting definitely will be. Soar above the mountains and find an unexpected peace in the sound of the wind and the tranquil views of the valley below.

The Morzine tourist office also does a fantastic job at organising events and festivals throughout the winter season. For families, the Morzine Enchanted Village is a delightful celebration of all things winter wonderland, whilst the Rock the Pistes festival showcases great music and good vibes, in a unique setting. Visit the Morzine-Avoriaz website for a full list of events this winter.

Over the last few years, Morzine has also enjoyed a growing wellness movement; centred around the beauty and grounding nature of the mountains. Alongside stunning spas, beauty treatments and massages, why not try a yoga session at the beautiful Morzine Yoga studio, or immerse yourself in the tranquillity of a sound bath session. There are also several gyms in Morzine if you’re missing your weekly workout, or just put on your shoes and head out the front door. There’s nothing quite like a run in the crisp cold air of a mountain morning.

Eating Out

For a relatively small mountain resort, Morzine has an amazing foodie scene. From the traditional Plat du Jour to Pan-Asian fusion, the range and variety of cuisines is remarkable.

This year we’ve seen a few notable rising stars which are definitely worth a try whilst you’re here. Our local brewery Ibex has recently expanded their brew house to include a bar and restaurant, so you can enjoy a wide range of tap beers brewed here in Morzine, whilst sampling their wonderful menu. With world food and tapas vibes, this is a great spot if you’re looking for something a bit different, and they always have fantastic veggie and vegan options.

Our second rising star is Solide Café. Located in the heart of Morzine, its trendy and relaxed vibe is the perfect place to stop for a coffee or brunch before hitting the slopes.

Whilst over by the Pleney, you’ll find the new Kamado Kitchen offering ramen, pad thai and delicious curries.

Eco-Initiatives

Morzine is paving the way in the development of sustainability and eco-tourism in the French Alps. This year, the Morzine ski area has established an environmental observatory to monitor local wildlife, with protection zones for black grouse. You can learn about all the beautiful birds of the alps, plus how we can protect them, with a visit to Les Aigles du Léman winter park.

A new trail, directly accessible from the top of the Nyon chairlift, has also been created. Suitable for all ages, this walking trail utilises an interactive map on the Locafaune app to tell you about all the incredible species living in the mountains, and why it is so important that we appreciate and protect them.

Some big steps have been made in reducing the Resort’s overall carbon footprint. Free buses and dedicated pedestrian areas in the centre of Morzine have been further implemented in order to reduce car usage and encourage the use of public transport.

And as if helping the environment isn’t rewarding enough, the AlpinExpress Pass can actually save you money! An initiative developed by our incredible charity Montagne Vert, the pass sees some 40 businesses come together to offer discounts on a huge range of activities for people who make the responsible travel choice to come to Morzine by train. From lift passes and equipment rental, to restaurants and accommodation, being sustainable has never been so rewarding!

On the topic of sustainable travel, Go-Morzine-Avoriaz.com have modified their booking platform so that you can now compare CO2 emissions against different travel options, as well as time and cost. So it’s never been so easy to make sustainable travel choices!
