When should you ski Morzine?

Ask ten skiers for the best time to visit the Alps and you will probably receive ten different answers.

Some want cold January mornings and as many kilometres as their legs can manage. Others want sunshine, a long lunch and absolutely no risk of removing a glove outdoors. Families have school dates to contend with, while Christmas groups are often planning a proper celebration with some skiing fitted around it.

The truth is that there is no single best week to ski Morzine. There is simply the part of the season that best suits the ski holiday you have in mind.

Here is our honest guide to choosing yours…

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR

Christmas and New Year in Morzine are about more than snow conditions. Morzine is lit up for the festive season, the chalets are decorated and nobody needs to decide whose house will accommodate the entire family for lunch.

There is, of course, plenty of skiing too. Avoriaz sits high above Morzine and provides access to a huge variety of terrain across the Portes du Soleil.

New Year brings an especially lively atmosphere, while Christmas tends to feel a little more relaxed and family-focused.

BEST FOR: Multi-generational families, groups of friends and anyone looking for a Christmas or New Year that feels genuinely different.

THE HONEST BIT: These are among the most sought-after dates of the winter. If you need a particular bedroom arrangement – or want everyone under one roof – it is sensible to plan early.

OUR CHRISTMAS PICK:

JANUARY

This is the time for those principally here to ski…

The slopes are generally quieter outside the New Year period, temperatures are colder and you can often cover a remarkable amount of the Portes du Soleil in a day.

It is a particularly good month for adults, confident skiers and groups who enjoy starting early, exploring further afield and returning to the chalet with legs that have clearly earned dinner.

It can also offer very good value compared with the peak holiday weeks for both self-catered and catered ski holidays – without making the holiday itself feel any less luxurious.

BEST FOR: Keen skiers, adults travelling without children and groups who want quieter pistes and plenty of mountain time.

THE HONEST BIT: January is cold. This is excellent news for the snow and slightly less excellent news for your fingers. Pack properly and choose a chalet with a hot tub.

FEBRUARY

For families in full holiday mode…

February brings longer days, a lively resort atmosphere and families from across Europe making the most of the school holidays. Morzine works particularly well for mixed ages and abilities.

Beginners can build confidence around Pleney and Nyon, while more experienced skiers can head towards Avoriaz, Châtel and Switzerland. Our guide to skiing Morzine with children has plenty of ideas for keeping younger skiers interested.

Off the slopes, there is lots to do if small legs need a day off.

BEST FOR: Families, mixed-ability groups and anyone who enjoys a lively resort with plenty happening.

THE HONEST BIT: February is popular. Ski lessons, childcare and larger chalets fill well ahead of the season, so this is not the week for a relaxed, last-minute group discussion involving twelve people.

OUR FEBRUARY PICK:

MARCH

For sunshine, softer temperatures and increasingly ambitious lunches…

March offers a lovely balance. The days are longer, the temperatures are often more forgiving and there is still an enormous ski area to explore. Start early, make the most of the morning conditions and then follow the sun towards a mountain terrace for lunch.

Higher and north-facing slopes can hold their snow particularly well;  our favourite is the Arare area in Avoriaz.

March is especially good for mixed groups. Keen skiers can still put in serious days, while everyone else can enjoy the mountains without feeling that every minute must be spent chasing lifts.

BEST FOR: Mixed-ability groups, couples, long lunches and skiers who prefer sunshine to frozen eyelashes.

THE HONEST BIT: Conditions naturally change through the day. The usual spring strategy is to ski earlier, follow the best snow and avoid turning lunch into a rushed administrative exercise.

EASTER AND SPRING

For skiing with a little more room in the itinerary…

Spring skiing has its own rhythm: bright mornings, warmer afternoons and the possibility of sitting outside without clutching your drink through a pair of mittens. At this point in the season, heading high is usually the key. Avoriaz provides excellent access to higher-altitude terrain, with areas such as Arare and Prolays.

Ski in the morning, stop for lunch, then return to the chalet for the hot tub – or try one of Morzine’s non-ski activities. We have even been husky sledding in mid-April!

BEST FOR: Families, beginners, mixed groups and anyone who wants skiing to be an important part of the holiday without necessarily being the whole holiday.

THE HONEST BIT: No one can guarantee the weather or snow conditions – not even somebody writing a ski-holiday guide many months in advance. Choosing higher terrain and adapting your ski day makes a big difference.
