Does a bumper crop of berries means we’re in for a great winter’s skiing?
Ancient folklore says that when the fruit on the trees and plants are plentiful in summer and autumn, it is nature’s way of providing a good stash of fuel for it’s animals ahead of a cold, hard winter. And of course a cold, hard winter is a good thing for skiiers and snowboarders.

Last year, we noticed less fruit than usual in the gardens around Morzine and this was followed by a pretty mild winter, although it did snow regularly throughout which meant people’s ski holidays were not affected by the warm temperatures. So, the question is… should we be getting excited about the fact that the gardens around the AliKats chalets are all currently laden with plums, apples and blackberries?
Well, we’ll take any chance to get excited about skiing the slopes of the Portes du Soleil in huge quantities of powder! So the answer to that particular question is ‘hells yeah, why not!”
However, we should be compelled to listen to the rational, empirical evidence-seeking voices in our heads and sadly, as far as we are aware there is no proven link between the berry crop and hardness of the winter.
We should be. But we’re not.
