Ski Avoriaz, Stay Morzine. Here’s Why!

March 24th, 2025 News

If you’re looking to ski on the snow-sure slopes of Avoriaz and the wider Portes du Soleil ski area, Morzine is a great place to base yourself. A charming Alpine village with lively après-ski, an impressive variety of restaurants, and plenty to do once off the slopes – stay in Morzine and you’ll have all this, plus one of the world’s biggest ski areas at your fingertips.

Why stay in Morzine if you want to ski in Avoriaz?

Staying in Morzine offers a unique combination of advantages, blending the charm and variety of an authentic Alpine village with incredible skiing in Avoriaz and the rest of the Portes du Soleil. Here are some of the key benefits:

Better access to the Portes du Soleil ski area

The Portes du Soleil ski area is one of the largest in Europe, linking multiple ski resorts in France and Switzerland. Morzine sits in the centre of it all, in a pretty valley, with the Avoriaz mountains, Châtel, and the Swiss resorts on one side, and the slopes of Morzine and Les Gets on the other. Several fast and efficient ski lifts take you in either direction. This puts you in a great position to access the Portes du Soleil’s 600 km of ski slopes, with the high peaks of Avoriaz being just a short lift ride away. Find out more about the geography of the resort and the main ski lifts from Morzine to Avoriaz  in our ski guide.

A pretty Alpine village with lots to do

Morzine is an authentic mountain village, and one that existed long before people thought about strapping skis on for sport. The oldest part of the village dates back to the 18th century, with a pretty church and a weekly farmers’ market that attracts locals and tourists alike. The town centre, with its charming carousel and outdoor ice rink, is a safe pedestrianized area, and is often lively with family entertainment or music put on by the Tourist Board. A swimming pool offers three pools, including a baby/toddler pool and a wellness area with saunas.

Staying in Morzine also means you can easily visit Les Aigles du Léman park for the chance to get up close with majestic birds of prey, including eagles, vultures, owls, and falcons. The park offers several bird shows during the day, where you can watch the birds flying against panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Exciting dining and après-ski options

Taste the specialties of the Alps, feast on amazing Italian pizza, delicious burgers, mouthwatering savoury crêpes, or Asian street food, Morzine offers a diverse range of restaurants, cafes, and bistros that cater to every taste and budget.

As well as exciting food options, Morzine has a vibrant après-ski scene. Whether you want a relaxed evening sipping cocktails or a lively night out, Morzine offers a wider range of options compared to the more limited choices in Avoriaz, which tends to be quieter at night. Straight off the slopes, head to Le Tremplin, Morzine’s legendary après-ski spot for live DJs and dancing. Catch live bands at The Cavern Bar, or for more relaxed vibes and craft beer, head to Le Bec Jaune Brewery. There are also several excellent options for wine and cocktails – Morzine’s nightlife has something for everyone.
