Reset your home for autumn with these chalet-inspired cleaning tips

August 17th, 2026 Sustainability

Summer has a habit of turning even the tidiest homes upside down. As children swap sandals for school shoes and routines return, September is the perfect time to refresh your home. A seasonal reset now will create a calmer, more organised space that’s ready for the cosy months ahead.

At AliKats, autumn marks the start of preparations for the winter season. We use eco-friendly cleaning products from Delphis Eco to carefully refresh every chalet and create warm, welcoming spaces where guests can unwind from the moment they arrive. The same thoughtful approach can help you reset your own home after a busy summer. Here are eight simple chalet-inspired tips to create a calmer, cleaner and cosier home for the season ahead.

Use fresh eyes

Rather than jumping straight in with the cleaning, start by walking through your front door as though you’ve just arrived for a week in the Alps. What immediately catches your eye? An overflowing shoe rack, fingerprints on the glass, a cluttered hallway? We often become blind to the mess in our own homes, so looking at it through a guest’s eyes is a great way to spot the areas that need the most attention.

Make a plan

Next, make a list of the areas that need the most attention. Breaking the job into smaller tasks makes it feel far more manageable, and there’s something satisfying about ticking each one off as you go.

Tackle tough first

Start with the room you’re dreading the most. Once the biggest job is behind you, everything else feels easier. To keep the momentum going, work on similar spaces together – bedrooms, bathrooms, living areas and hallways – before finishing with the quickest jobs, so the day ends on a high rather than feeling like a slog.

Clean without chemicals

At AliKats, we use Delphis Eco products throughout our chalets because they deliver excellent results without relying on harsh chemicals. Choosing eco-friendly cleaning products, such as Delphis Eco’s household cleaning range, can help reduce unnecessary chemical exposure in your home while keeping surfaces spotless. It’s a simple switch that supports a healthier indoor environment and reflects our commitment to protecting the beautiful Alpine landscape that our guests come to enjoy.

Build a team

Preparing a mountain chalet is never a one-person job, and the same applies at home. If you have others who can lend a hand, get them involved. Younger children can pair socks, tidy shoes or put away toys after a summer of adventures, while older children can help with hoovering, dusting or changing bedding. Working together gets the job done faster and helps everyone settle back into their routines before the new school term. A little reward, such as an ice cream sundae or a trip to the park, can make the experience fun for everyone.

Make it a game

If housework feels like a chore, turn it into a game. Set a timer and see how many items you can sort, tidy or put away in just 10 minutes. For children, try a “7 toys in 7 days” challenge, where they choose one toy each day to donate, sell or recycle if it’s no longer in good condition. Adding a little friendly competition makes the job feel less daunting and gives everyone a sense of achievement.

Sort it

Now is the time to get rid of out-grown clothing, lone flip flops and worn-out backpacks. As you work through each room, have bags for rubbish, donation and recycling close to hand. Having a clear system makes decisions quicker and prevents clutter from simply being moved from one room to another.

Remove it

Once you’ve decided what to keep and what to part with, act on it. Take donations to the charity shop, book repairs and empty the recycling before the piles start creeping back into your home. A reset only works if the clutter actually leaves the house.

Refresh bedrooms

New routines and changing seasons all call for restful sleep, so make sure bedrooms feel fresh and peaceful. Wipe surfaces, change linen, hoover under beds and reorganise wardrobes and cabinets for easy mornings. Tidy homework desks, make sure the space is tidy, well-lit, and stocked with essential supplies.

Reclaim the kitchen

Just as we prepare our chalet kitchens for a winter of cooking, it’s worth giving your own kitchen a fresh start before the cosy nights set in. Clear out the fridge and cupboards, throw away expired food and use up summer leftovers. Wipe down worktops, organise your pantry and make space for healthy lunchbox essentials and easy after-school snacks. An organised kitchen makes mealtimes far easier to manage.

Add the finishing touches

A beautifully prepared chalet isn’t just clean—it feels inviting. Before winter begins, we swap lightweight summer bedding for warmer layers, drape blankets over outdoor seating and add soft cushions and throws throughout our chalets. At home, a few simple changes can transform the atmosphere too: layer chunky knit blankets over the sofa, add a quilted bedspread, or switch to brushed cotton bedding. These tactile textures create a warmer, more welcoming space that’s made for relaxing as the days get colder.

Eco chalet Morzine

Discover Morzine and the Portes du Soleil, with over 600km of pistes to explore in winter and endless hiking, biking and alpine adventures in summer.
