Experience Spring in Morzine

In spring the mountains open up to a world of opportunities for adventurers and nature lovers. As the snow melts and the mountainside turns a beautiful shade of green, the Alps reawaken with an abundance of Alpine bird and wildlife, the trails become accessible by foot or bike, and the rivers reach their highest, creating gushing rapids ripe for navigation by whitewater thrill-seekers.

Vibrant Spring is an energising and exciting time to hike in the mountains, with sightings of amazing birds of prey and wildlife such as golden eagles, marmots, Ibex and Chamois, a frequent occurrence.

Hiking routes vary from easy walks along the river Dereches, Lac Montriond and Lac des Mines D’Or to challenging 4 – 6 hour summit climbs to reach some of the famous peaks in the area. The Point de Nyon, Roc D’Enfer, Mont Ouzon, Ressachaux and Nantaux, which can be hiked from Montriond in around 4 hours and is the tallest mountain in Morzine, are all summits that should be added to your must-hike list.

Morzine is a popular road biking destination from May to September, with spring offering quiet roads and spectacular views. There are a range of routes suitable for novices through to accomplished cyclists who want to test their skill on the famous cols of the Tour de France.

Water sports

The French Alps are well-known for their river activities and Morzine offers no shortage of thrills and spills in the whitewater department. Travelling by river also opens up some spectacular scenery. The river Dranse from Morzine runs through a deep gorge made up of unusual rock formations, pinnacles and boulders, some of which create fun platforms to jump from.

Rafting, hydrospeeding (navigating the river rapids on a float) and kayaking are at their most thrilling in Spring when the river is running fast due to extensive snow melt. More gentle water activities, such as stand up paddle boarding and canoeing can be enjoyed on the beautiful Lac Montriond throughout Spring on public holidays and weekends.

Day Trips

Spring is low season in the Alps, making it a peaceful time to explore the sights, authentic villages and towns of the Haute Savoie region. Head to lakeside Annecy for historic sights, interesting boutiques and wonderful restaurants, or take in the breathtaking views of Lake Geneva from the stunning medieval town of Yvoire. From Chamonix you can also board the Aiguille du Midi cable car for an up-close view of Mont Blanc.
