Chamonix

Nestled at the base of Mont Blanc, and only an hour and twenty minutes’ drive away, Chamonix is a charming mountain town dominated by huge peaks and rugged mountain ranges. The town is the starting point for conquest on the summits of the Mont-Blanc massif and is entrenched deep into the history of mountaineering. You can witness this everywhere; in the food, the street art, photography exhibits, Alpinist museums and the excellent mountain sports shops. There is excellent skiing here during the winter, as well as an indoor climbing wall which is perfect for those rainy days.

But it’s in the summer time that Chamonix really gives you its all. As well as the usual hiking and biking, Chamonix offers some of the coolest once-in-a-lifetime experiences you’re likely to find in the area. Take the Aguille du Midi – the highest cable car in the Alps – on a breathtaking journey across glaciers and seracs; test your nerve at the top on the Step into the Void viewing platform; or take a humbling journey into the beautiful Mer de Glace glacier via the wonderful Montenver funicular railway. For a phenomenal spa experience, check into QC Terme for the day. The spa has been crafted as a deep sensory journey inspired by the natural benefits of mountains, with indoor and outdoor elements, including the opportunity to admire the Aiguilles de Chamonix from the outdoor hydromassage pool.

Yvoire

If you’re in the mood for history, charm and relaxing walks in the sunshine, look no further than Yvoire. This stunning little Mediaeval village on the shores of Lake Geneva (referred to as Lac Leman on the French shores of the lake) dates back to the 14th century, and retains a lot of its historical charm and atmosphere. Grab an ice cream and take a meandering walk through the cobbled streets. Here you can marvel at the imposing silhouette of Yvoire castle, admire the original ramparts and fortifications, and sit and watch the boats go by on the crystal clear waters of Lake Geneva.

Yvoire also has a wonderful botanical garden called Le Jardin des Cinq Sens (the Garden of Five Senses); named as such due to its focus on plants and flowers that tickle your taste buds, excite your ears, and generally delight your senses. There are also countless restaurants and eateries, independent shops and spots to just sit and enjoy the peace of the day.

Annecy

Annecy is a hub of art, culture, sport and history, and at only an hour and a half’s drive away, it’s a must on your adventure list. The number one thing to see in Annecy has got to be the lake. Walk, hire a bike, or even take a segway; have a picnic or stop at the many food and ice cream shops along the way. However you do it, the crystal clear waters encircled by the imposing mountainous backdrop are a unique and unmissable experience.

If history is your thing, Annecy castle and museum are well worth a visit, or soak up some knowledge at the Palais de l’Île, a Mediaeval castle and prison located in the heart of the old town. And the Old Town itself is one of the most beautiful features of Annecy. Often referred to as ‘the Venice of the Alps’, the network of canals and narrow streets which run through the historic buildings are reminiscent of the iconic Italian island. In the Old Town you’ll find shops, boutiques, restaurants, and countless historical and architectural features that will delight and enthral. You can easily fill two or three days in Annecy so we recommend doing some research beforehand so you don’t miss out.

Sixt- Fer- à- Cheval

If you’re in the mood for somewhere a bit quieter, full of nature and authentically Alpine,

Sixt- Fer- à- Cheval is a stunning choice. Nestled quite close to Morzine (under an hour’s drive away by car), the village of Sixt- Fer- à- Cheval is beautifully traditional in its architecture, food and pace of life. What sets it aside from the other pretty villages in the Haute-Savoie region, however, is the extraordinary landscape which surrounds it. Spend the day exploring the Sixt-Passy nature reserve – the largest nature reserve in the Haute Savoie region. Make sure you stop at the Cascade du Rouget – an impressive eighty meter high waterfall – and factor in a walk around the incredible Cirque du Fer- à- Cheval, the largest mountain cirque in the Alps surrounded by stunning waterfalls, sheer cliffs and lush forests. If you fancy a bit of adrenaline amongst this verdant, Alpine paradise, the Tines Gorges are a fantastic spot for rafting, kayaking and gorge walking, or watch the birds soar as you scale the sheer rocks of the via ferrata.
