CHRISTMAS SKIING IN MORZINE

The best part of Christmas in the Alps is being able to ski on Christmas day, and yes the ski lifts are open as usual. Whether you want to lazily head to the slopes after opening presents or get out early for first lifts, the whole of the 650 km of pistes of the Portes du Soleil is waiting for you.

The huge variety of terrain, off-piste areas and snow parks makes the resort a great choice for all abilities of skiers and mixed ability groups. In total the Portes du Soleil has 31 green runs, 122 blue runs, 100 red and 32 blacks, as well as over 30 snow parks; it therefore, really does cater extremely well to families and mixed groups. The kids ski areas add another level of excitement to skiing on the mountain for little ones, and should not be missed.

Stopping for a vin chaud, hot chocolate or spot of lunch to soak up the festive ambiance in a cosy mountain restaurant is all part of the fun. Mountain restaurants often serve a special festive lunch menu and a lovely place to stop for lunch is Les Lindarets village, which is accessible via the Ardent bubble. Le Chaudron is great for large groups, serving delicious French and local specialities, burgers and salads, whilst the La Ferme is a cosy little restaurant serving tasty Italian cuisine, including a delicious Parmigiana Di Melanzane and amazing fresh pizza. FESTIVE FAMILY FUN IN MORZINE

The French ski resort of Morzine is an authentic Alpine town, with charming buildings and a bustling town square. With twinkling lights and decorations, a huge Christmas tree, an ice rink and an array of festive activities for all the family, it’s a truly magical place to spend your Christmas chalet holiday in the Alps.

The Morzine festive event calendar runs for two weeks over Christmas and New Year, and includes street entertainment and music, fireworks, special shows for children and plenty of opportunities to see Father Christmas.

For the second half of December the Enchanted Village runs for two weeks and includes the magical arrival of Father Christmas on Christmas Eve. On this special evening the town is bustling with families who come to enjoy the impressive festive show, a huge firework display on the Pleney and to see the man himself.

Festivities continue every day until New Year’s Eve, when around 6pm there is a torchlight descent by ESF ski instructors followed by fireworks on the Pléney, plus music and DJs until 1am.

FUN OFF THE SLOPES

Non-ski activities in and around Morzine include ice skating in the outdoor or indoor ice rink, a trip to the stunning Vallee de la Manche for sledging and exploring Morzine’s huge igloo, the highly rated Alta Lumina night walk, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, husky sleigh rides and ski-joering (the Nordic activity of being pulled along on skis behind a horse).

Another special attraction that is new to the area and well worth checking out, is the Aigles du Léman at Restaurant la Pointe de Nyon. At an altitude of 1413m, accessed on skies or by foot via the Nyon telecabine, you can discover several birds of pray including eagles, buzzards and owls, watch falconry displays and even ski with these impressive birds.

SNOW CONDITIONS

One of the great things about Christmas skiing in Morzine is that you can enjoy all the fun of staying in a pretty Alpine town, whilst skiing in one of the biggest ski resorts in Europe, with the advantage of high altitude skiing. As part of the epic Portes du Soleil ski area, Morzine is well connected to Avoriaz, Chatel and Switzerland, which all sit at around 2,000m so are the first to see the snow during those early season dumps.

CHRISTMAS MENU

The festive fun starts on Christmas Eve with mulled wine and mince pies for afternoon tea, plus Champagne and canapés served before dinner. Then Christmas day we stay mostly within tradition with a few special twists, as you would expect from an AliKats menu.
