Declaring a Climate Emergency
Why are we declaring a climate emergency?
The Amazon and much of Australia up in flames, the polar ice caps melting, temperatures here in the Alps rising at almost twice the global average, with glaciers disappearing and snow cover predicted to shrink by 35% by 2035. It’s clear that our planet is suffering a climate emergency, which requires immediate and radical action by governments, industry and business across the world
Together we can help
That’s why, together with a group of other businesses, organisations and individuals in the tourism industries, we are declaring a climate emergency, as part of the Tourism Declares initiative. We’re committed to setting a science-based emission reduction target to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions at the pace and scale that science says is necessary to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C.
As a signatory, we have committed to the following actions:
- We have developed a Climate Action Plan, with science-based targets to get us to carbon neutral by 2022.
- We publicly accept current advice from The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stating the need to cut global carbon emissions to 55% below 2017 levels by 2030 in order to keep the planet within 1.5 degrees of warming. Our plan represents actions designed to go beyond this target in the reduction of carbon emissions as we work towards becoming a net zero company.
- We commit to transparently sharing progress publicly every year.
- We are working together with competitors, suppliers and partners to share best practice and solutions with the wider travel industry.
- We recognise the need for system change across the industry to accelerate a just transition towards carbon-free tourism.
